About 2 ½ years ago I went to Eunice James with a very specific request. I was in the midst of 4-months of chemotherapy to treat an aggressive form of metastatic prostate cancer. My fatigue levels were rising and I didn’t want to make things worse with a strenuous workout. But I also knew that the right kind of workout would be better for my head than sitting home feeling tired anyway.

Eunice put together a package that included stretching, agility and light weights. We followed this pattern for the duration of the chemo and recovery period. As I got stronger she increased the weights so that I could continue to improve without overtraining. To supplement the workout with Eunice, I now swim at the Y twice a week. Eunice has been invaluable in tailoring my weight workouts to strengthen my shoulders and core.

I’ve made two major mistakes in my workout life: 1) overtraining and getting hurt, and 2) dropping out altogether. With Eunice I get the guidance to keep from making the first mistake and the benefit of those appointments each week to keep me from making the second.

I began working with Eunice James in August 2007 and, with her help, have had great success. My goal was to improve my health and to get and stay physically fit enough to keep up with my young family. Eunice has a unique ability to motivate her clients to work hard and challenge themselves. I’ve never felt better and, although I’ve had a few stops and starts, I have not ‘fallen off’ the fitness wagon—as had happened in years past. I recently came across a paper listing the goals I set for myself when I began working out with Eunice nearly 6 years ago and realized that I had achieved every one of them: My chronic lower back problems have disappeared and my lumbar spine is strong and stable; I am stronger—especially in my upper body, more flexible and have great balance; I am toned and fit and feel great. And it shows in the numbers. I have lost (and kept off) 22 pounds; my blood pressure is 120/80 (and often below that); my bone density has improved to the point that I am no longer on the brink of osteoporosis. At 61 I look and feel better than I did at 45. But most important I have accomplished all this steadily, safely and with a new sense of joy in physical activity. Eunice gave me the structure, the support and the self-confidence to stick with a regular workout program. Since the beginning she has listened carefully, paid attention to where I am on any given day, and customized every regimen to meet my needs and goals. I could not have done this without her.

I have been coming to Eunice twice a week since 1998. At first, I had weight to lose. I’d spent the last 2 years caring for 93-year-old parents before their deaths. They were not very active, and neither was I. Eunice is an innovator, a stimulator. She likes what she does, and she almost makes you like moving, as well. I found myself walking 30 minutes every morning and then doing the stretches she taught me afterwards. I strengthened my muscles in her studio twice a week and then found myself getting the the things done in my life that needed doing. Now, I’m only at a loss for what to say when someone says, “But, you don’t look 78.” I smile, think of Eunice, and try to look something like “wise.”

For my husband and me, a friend’s recommendation in 1995 was our introduction to Eunice. We began a program of personal fitness tailored specifically to our needs.

Over time, Eunice’s dedication went well beyond the client-teacher relationship. When my husband’s struggles with Alzheimer’s made it difficult for him to pursue a studio program, she made the one-hour-plus round trip to our home for several months to encourage and support him.

Eunice has been an important motivating force in my sustained commitment to living healthier and happier. And, keeping me focused for over 5 years has been no easy task! She does it through innovation, mixing it up, tailoring workouts for my foolishly busy schedule, and helping me to truly “see” the connection between everything I do in her studio and how it impacts my body. I’m hesitant to use the words “personal trainer” to describe a true fitness professional who is a coach, teacher, teammate, cheerleader, and friend.

“You’re not alone.  We’ll fight this together,” Eunice said.  It was July 2013 – the year Parkinson’s knocked on my door.  I was 68; I’d been seeing Eunice weekly for 17 years.  “You’re strong,” she said.  “You have a baseline.”  Today – thanks to Eunice’s energy, knowledge, and holistic approach to fitness – I am able to take out my own trash, drive to yoga class, and leg press 200 pounds. Eunice is a friend and helpmate, and … she actually saves me money by helping me stay independent.  I highly recommend this unswervingly dedicated trainer!
